Nanotechnology is a rapidly developing research area with wide application potential in various fields in recent years. This field includes biomedicine, environmental remediation, consumer products, optoelectronics, chemical catalysis, renewable energy, medical devices, and the food industry. Applications of nanotechnology in the food industry include the detection of contaminants, the production of pollution-free and healthy food for consumers, and the improvement of food properties.
Nanotechnology-based sensors are used during food processing to prevent contaminants and increase food safety and quality. Packaging systems developed with this technology allow for the detection of food spoilage inside the container. Nanotechnology is also used to improve the taste, texture, color, and overall quality of food through nanoadditives. In addition, nanoemulsions and nanolaminates are applied to increase and improve the nutritional value of food products.
Industrial significance: Nanotechnology is mainly used for the inspection and protection of food during processing, storage, and transportation. This technology helps protect food from contamination and increase its shelf life. It allows for the development of innovative methods that are currently in demand in the food industry. This review article summarizes the main areas of application of nanotechnology in the food industry.
