Title:THE PROBLEMS OF THE VILLAGE IN AZERBAIJANI LITERARY PROSE (in Azerbaijani)
Volume:6
Issue:4
Abstract:

In Azerbaijani literary prose, the theme of the village occupied a central place in the 20th century, particularly during the 1960s–1990s. This period was enriched with works that realistically and poetically reflected the social, economic, and cultural problems of village life. Unlike earlier periods, village prose explored not only agriculture but also human and societal relations in depth.

The main themes of these works include the universality of the village, preservation of traditions, and social issues. Writers such as I. Melikzade, S. Ahmadov, S. Azeri, Isa Huseynov, and M. Suleymanly depicted the village’s socio-economic conditions, the inner world of individuals, and matters of conscience. Additionally, the novella genre of this period extensively presented the socio-psychological portrait of the village.

Azerbaijani village prose differs from Russian prose in that village characters are not limited to geographical and sketch descriptions; they focus on national-moral and socio-psychological characteristics. Traditional heroes give way to complex, realistic, and poetic characters. Literary scholars note that the primary issues in village-themed literature relate to land, labor, and socio-economic conditions.

In conclusion, Azerbaijani village prose of the 1960s–1990s reflects a bold, socially and aesthetically rich period in terms of both themes and style. The depiction of village problems is presented not only realistically but also poetically and aesthetically, enhancing the significance of this period in Azerbaijani literature.
